Teaching Experience
There is no place like BYU to teach. Whatever our differences in opinion or interests, I know what I share with my students: A love of learning and a belief in the power of education to refine, strengthen, and enliven us. These shared values make it possible for us to approach complex questions and important topics from a variety of perspectives, and to work together to learn and to produce knowledge.
Research
I study American literature and life before 1860. I’m interested in the diversity of America during this period. My current book-in-progress is titled _Saltwater: Globalizing Early New England Grief_, and it explores the way minor but sustained afflictive experiences connected Americans geographically and emotionally.
